BBP Info
The BECA Bachillerato Program ("BBP") began in 2007 at the urging of 9th grade BECA teachers Bridget Kelly and Hilary Hammell. Bridget and Hilary noticed that SJBS' first graduating class had students who would be unable to afford the tuition at bilingual high school programs in San Pedro Sula. In order to ensure that SJBS' most talented students were not denied bilingual education after 9th grade, they lobbied the BECA board to establish the BBP, which would provide a merit- and need-based scholarship to students who met specific academic and financial criteria. In keeping with the BECA philosophy, these students would have to give back to SJBS with service hours fulfilled throughout the year. BECA's Board approved Bridget's and Hilary's initial proposal, which you can read here.
For 2007 and 2008, the only BBP recipient was Efrain Bautista, who used his BBP scholarship to attend the Morrazzani Bilingual School in San Pedro Sula. Efrain graduated from that school in Spring 2009 with an award for best English speaker of his grade and a 90% overall average. He is taking civil engineering classes at a local university and part-time teaching English at the Superacion school.
Last year, Glenin Jehovany Paz received the BBP and began studying at the prestigious Seran school in San Pedro Sula. He has kept his average in the high 90s and has received accolades from students and teachers alike. Glenin's second year of high school will continue to be funded by the BBP
This year, BECA awarded two BBP scholarships to our graduating 9th grade class. Katerin Cacho and Christopher Portillo were academically eligible and received exemplary recommendations from their teachers. With BECA's help, they will both be studying at the Morrazzani Bilingual School beginning this Fall. Please read more about the BBP here.
